I was reading an article about Jack Frost being the favourite British detective on tv and I had also heard morse was so I thought why not ask the people who matter so who is the best British detective

I will also do one about US detetives

opens for only one response, and sind I don't have a clear candidate I voted "other".

British detective series are generally very good, although some tend to be a little stereotypic after a while. Then again: What series doesn't?

As actors I'd like to mention John Thaw, John Nettles and Helen Mirren. They have all starred in several series and are a clear guarantee that here comes something worth seeing.

helen Mirren are you thinking of prime suspect Inge?

also the Lynda la plante series trial and retribution spring to mind

They give most of the series Norwegian names here so I'm not sure. But HM has had many roles, and if I remember correctly she also received a quite prestigious prize for her role as Queen Elisabeth.

I have to admit my favourite detective, like many things, varies depending on my mood :)

I like John Nettles (barnaby / bergerac) but both series have such a different feel it is hard to compare them.

David Jason (Frost) is certainly a change from some of the more polished 'suit and tie' detectives, but I suspect that Morse appealed to a older, more sophisticated audience (and oxford students who played 'spot the location')

So no vote here, but thats not a reflection on the choice, just my peculiarities.

I liked Sherlock Holmes, Poirot, Miss Marple, but prefered the Avengers (Steed and Mrs Emma Peele) and am fond of the American detectives too!

Hi :)

My favourite from your list is "Frost" set in Manchester. The excellent portrayal by David Jason made the character.

Here are some Scottish detectives.

"Rebus" from the books by Ian Rankin, some very dark stories set in a very dark Edinburgh not familliar to visitors

"Taggart" by Glenn Chandler and set in Glasgow.
The original Jim Taggart of the title was played by the late Mark McManus.
The show kept the title after his sudden untimely death.

Ian McLaren :)

I'm surprised that Sherlock Holmes beats Morse. SH is so yesterday, he didn't even have a CSI and forensics team...
