Surfbar Beta Test

It was definitely different. It was okay. The only problem I had was a had the make the window a little bigger to see the bottom bar. When the next website showed up, it was back the same way. I couldn't open the window any bigger so I could see the bottom bar. Oh well.

Not all bad ... but ... the dark red top banner frame is annoying to the eyes and makes it hard to read most of the things in that frame. The previous top banner was much better compared to this. The bottom banner frame does not always load, especially within the 10 sec time frame, and even has blank areas after a minute or more.

Chat should be left in the forum, so you can get your activity points and build up links for SEO to your domains.

The members home link at the top is redundant since it's in the menu at the bottom. If you removed that link at the top, you could put the assign credits link there. Alternatively, you could add the assign credits link to the menu at the bottom, but I like having it in the same window/tab.

I hate it, all Red color.
I can't read well StartXchange title and the red color is too strong for my eyes.
I prefer the old one, or the same but light yellow or lime green.
I also dislike to see two images on the down bar.

The colors - red/orange - are the StartXchange colors, that's why they were chosen =P I'll see if I can find different shades of the colors to make it easier to see ;-)

I've jotted down all the navigational notes and will give it a second go soon. Some items were dropped to keep it to a minimum, I'll give any mentioned a second thought.

Also note that chat may come in the future.. I like it, but obviously it'll be optional =P

I like it! I haven't had any problems yet, the new colors are great, and the addition of the "surf (# ) to pass " feature spurs a sense of competition that makes me keep clicking.

I do miss the "assign credits" feature though.

I like it Tim. It is good that you can see the person who's site you're seeing. Also seeing the picture of the person directly ahead of you makes you more competitive. I have only a small doubt about the color scheme, although I think I could get used to it. All in all it's good.

First impression is that it is OK, but I really like the old better. What I really miss is the pictures of those surfing on the bottom. I don't see anything about the 1000 credit winners if this program is still active.

I do really like the idea of seeing who's site it is. This is one aspect I would keep no matter what you decide to do with the surf bar.

The only real problem I have is sometimes the bottom bar is too far down and I can't see it because it is off the screen. Probably my computer, but you wanted to know.

Okay the colors took me a little aback - but I think I like them. I DO miss the Assign Credits tab. I like the bottom bar that shows how many clicks you are behind someone...well I think I do. I tend to be a bit competitive and that feature might drive me a little nuts always trying to catch up...LOL!

I like seeing the person whose site I am viewing. So, mostly positive thoughts on it - a few tweaks would be nice - but overall - likable.

I really like the new surfbar, it's fun to see how many pages I have to go before passing the person in front of me, and makes it a lot easier on me as well, since I'm not flipping through different tabs just to keep track of everything.

I would just like to add a note of help to those that are having a problem with the bottom bar not showing all the way or having a problem with the color scheme, just so Tim can have a break for a moment or three.

For those that are having a problem with the bottom bar not showing pressing F11 on your keyboard will tell your browser to go to full screen mode, you will still have access to your tabs, just move your mouse to the very top of the screen and they will come up. Being in full screen mode should bring the bottom bar into view (it has for me on various occasions when things seemed to be out of whack), if not than there might be another setting you have to fix within your computer for it to appear correctly on your screen.

For those that are having an issue with the color scheme: if you are using firefox, click on tools > options > colors, set your preferences and make sure "system colors" is checked and "allow pages to choose their own colors instead of my selections above" is unchecked.

If you are an Internet Explorer user: Click on tools > internet options > colors, than set your preferred colors. Afterwards click on accessibility and make sure "ignore colors specified on webpages" is checked.

Doing this will not only save you a lot of headaches, but also save a lot of headaches for Tim as well with trying to please everyone. If this doesn't work within another browser you are using, I'm sorry that I couldn't have been of more help to you, I only use FireFox and on occasion Internet Explorer. Though if you are needing help, please feel free to pm and I will try checking out the browser you are using so I am able to be of more assistance.

At first the bottom bar was too small, couldn't read anything, now its too big, takes away from the site being viewed, if there was an in between, then it would be perfect.

bottom surfbar don't seem to want to stay big enough to view while surfing, and while right here at the forum (inside surf frame) the bottom is perfect, but can barely see the bottom of the shapes. The only problems I've seen are the top/bottom bar alignment and no autoassign button. Could possibly place a quick assign button in the drop down menu on the bottom bar.

I say remove the total credits from the top surfbar, we don't really need that and it will shorten the top bar if removed. Leave today's credits or available credits, but you can remove the total as far as I'm concerned.

I do not like the colour scheme of the new surfbar. The yellow tends to hurt my eyes and the blue blends in with the red.

I do like the design and I do like knowing how far in front is the next surfer. It is much better than being told that I have to surf so many sites to reach or maintain my level :-)

Overall I like this better than the other surfbar, but there are a few problems with it.

1. The bottom bar is nearly hidden unless window is maximized (I have a 21" monitor so I can have more windows open so never maximize anything)

2. All that credit stuff in the top bar ends up in 4 or 5 lines when I load SX in a tab with my other exchanges. That wrapped text increases the height so much it makes the ad display page too small and I think the advertisers are being cheated since I can't see enough of their pages. (We don't need to see that total credit amount.

3. Goal pages remaining missing (not a huge problem, just pointing it out).

4. Display of nightly winners is missing, so we're back to not knowing whether anyone we know has won unless/until we hit 100 pages. Definitely want that back on the page.

5. Not enough contrast between the red and orange (you already know I hate the red/orange combination so that is a moot point since I know that isn't going to change any time soon).

Wow Tim,

I was away on vacation for 2 days to a Beach Resort with my family, school holiday fun for my boy & I just got back & thought I log in to a wrong site.

Change is irresitable & we all just have to get use to it. Overall features are fine except with the Red & Orange mix that does not give it the contrast.

It's a bit too red for my eyes & that's about it I have for now.

I think it's great. You get to see who's actually promoting the site you're watching and if they do a good job at e.g. creating their own splashpages it will add to their name value. I can see who's ahead of me and how many sites I have to surf to pass them, great psychology, noone can stand someone being ahead of them (lol). It will increase surfing overall.
The red colour is way too bright and hurtful to my eyes after a while. Can you also add a link to 'open site in new window' in the top bar?

Love this feature Tim. Actually, it's better than having the number of pages to reach your goal because the "Goal" figures don't always guarantee that you will reach/stay where you think you'll be. Besides, this gives you lots of little goals that it will sometimes take only a few pages to reach.

Yep. Now the only problem with color is the images we must match. The diamond is in a color that is too close to the background of the surfbar, and nearly disappears into the surfbar when on the ends.

Oops! I noticed one problem with this. The number of pages I need to surf if I want to pass the person in front of me is tracking just fine, and even shows their correct level (which is confusing if someone from a level below is in front of you - which makes you think you are dropping, lol); but your script isn't picking up the correct username of that member. I am currently behind grangonzo, but my surfbar says gonzalo.

Also, I did notice that the two can appear out of synch because they are loading the data at different times. I'm surfing and so is the person in front of me, so I'll pass for a second and she'll pass me, etc, but the timing is live so depending on when I refresh what page it might be different.

I like to goal activity counter, but read where you don't have enough room to place it on the surfbar. I was hopping it could be place in one of the left or right "red" sections at the bottom.

StartXchange Surfbar is broken. Basically, some time yesterday afternoon, every time I click on one of the objects that is the ONLY matching pair in the surfbar, it provides me with a "Wrong Shape Clicked" message and provides me with no credit. This happens each and every time that I click on a matching shape, so there is something wrong with your database or your procedure. This is still occurring this morning as of 11:00AM CST.

Tim, I noticed that with the old system, some websites would load slow and cause the timer to hang-up. It would not count untill the site started back. With your new system, the counter counts regardless of what the websites are doing. I hope you find this and make sure it remains. Many other traffic exchanges may want to learn this.

okay, I seem to be one of the only ones experiencing the problem with not seeing the whole bottom surfbar. Why me? I had it to where I could see the whole thing for about ten sites or so once, but then it went back to only being able to see the names and the top of their pics???

It always does that and then asks you if you want to check your websites to see the changes. I sometimes do that and ALWAYS see the credit information applied and complete. Never wiped out.

When you click assign, it automatically assigns the credits to your sites based on the rate you have assigned to each site. Once it goes through all the sites, there are sometimes credits left over because of the way the computer figures things. That's what the 12 credits are. If you click on the link to view your websites, you will see all the assigned credits.

Here is what the left side of my surfbar looks like if my window is any smaller than 81% of my screen width (which is way too big):

The only thing I might suggest changing? Get rid of the icons to click next with (the shapes) and not only use images that have the same background color as the header so they blend in seamlessly, but images that are more in line with the "new look"

Running a bit jerky, on my machine. Interesting concept, and neat being able to see how far you have to go to move ahead. Several pages not displaying, or making the display with only a couple seconds left to before the next click opportunity. Timer has stopped several times, sometimes restarting with the next second, sometimes jumping to completion. Once it smooths out, it will be terrific, and something for all the rest of the TE's to follow. Marketing opportunity for you to all the other TE's. Took a bit longer to get to my first 100 of the day.

at least 2 lines less in the upper surfbar (the first and last line contain one "word" each and a little layout change could fix that). I think 7 lines for a surfbar is 3 lines too much.

The lower surfbar however, shows only 1 out of 4 lines unless the window is maximized, covering everything else on the screen.

The new layout has taken into use some good things, but at a high expense.

Most web sites are narrower than about 800 pixels. With that window width at least 99% of the sites can be seen in full.
However, the surfbars can't.
The upper surbar becomes 7 lines total, while 3 should be enough (This takes up 6 lines alone: "6252.98 Credits (Assign (http://www.startxchange.com/members/autoassign.php)) Surfing Bonus: 45% (http://www.startxchange.com/members/surfingbonus.php)" -- and the upper surfbar has only one "word" in line 1 and 6! )

The lower surfbar is 3 lines but only the first line shows.
I would like to see what's there without having to maximize the window.

With a larger window I won't be able to use the computer for anything else while surfing, and I surf nearly ALL the time I'm using the computer.

Please correct the layout so we can see our level/ranking, and let's get the goal back!

This one is, but if I should use full screen I'd be unable to work. I hardly ever only have one window open, sometimes as many as 20. DeHawkinz' suggestion that I can switch between them by Alt-Tabbing is nothing but ludicrous (although I didn't laugh).

Most sites are seen just fine, with their full contents, with a size of 800x600. We used to be able to see the StartXchange surfbar in full using that window size, and we should still be able to. A little creativity is all that's required.

I think there's very little point in adding new information to a surfbar when it can't be seen during regular surfing -- especially when there's so much white space that could be filled using a slightly different layout.

We are all individuals, and have our own preferences and quirks - none is more, or less, right than another.

Any website should be viewed in full with 800x600 resolution. To make a WEB page that needs more is to force a limitation on all users.
I don't remember seeing any site viewed by StartXchange where I couldn't see the essentials.
Now the surfbar forces you to increase the size of the window if you want to see the surfbar information. That would be totally unnecessary with a slight redesign of the surfbar.

I do not think it's a good idea to enforce such limitations on the users.

The surfbar will now remove the logo and shorten the Home and Report links when displayed on lower resolution PCs. Please note that less than 7% of all StartXchange users have less than 1024x768 resolution on StartXchange.

The new design was made to utilize the extra space so that everything wasn't jammed into one small box giving it a crowded feeling. The new one the items will move as it's resized so they are spaced out, giving it a cleaner simpler feeling.

The text in the light brown line under the upper surfbar could be made more "efficient" and make room for the text above.

I'd like to see something like this:

Moving credits and bonus down one line would free about an inch of space from the upper bar. Credits doesn't need decimals.

The lower bar has a lot of white space, so it could be made narrower and show all the information at 800 pixels width.
With changes like this you might find room for the StartXchange logo again. The counter could be moved a little (above home/report?), and the logo could show during countdown.

I don't know if this has anything to do with the surfbar changes, but StartXchange has been taking long breaks today, waiting a minute or even more to show the next page. I don't think it's the connection because other sites have behaved normally.

I love the new surfbar. I think it is much more attractive and professional than the old one. It took me a while to figure out why the member on the left was being shown. Now that I have figured out it is the person sponsoring the ad, I think it is a fantastic feature. Provides the ability to contact the person about the opportunity.

I really like the new look. It displays all the info I want to see. I especially like the bottom bar. It helps to brand the members when you can put a face to their URLs. I bet the surfing is up, now that you can see who's in front of you and what you need to surf to pass them. That keeps me surfing longer. Whoopi

This would have been nice if we could just see more than the top of their heads.
It's especially annoying because with a little layout adjustment the full lower surfbar could be displayed at 800 px wide, which is the widest I can use.

This SURFBAR is good. I like where the "Match the Shape" is at on the top. It needs to stay at the top. The Statistics of who is ahead of you and who is behind you is a great extra!!! I hope you will KEEP the Surfbar THIS WAY!!! Way to go!!

What's the point in having "good things" in the surfbar when they are not visible? Of course, these things are not that important, but again, what's the point?
I refuse to think I'm the only one who maintains a reasonable window size.

I would hate to disagree with you, but my stats of the last 106,870 visitors to my site show the following screen resolutions:

39.78%.....1280x1024
32.26%.....1024x768
25.81%.....Unknown
1.08%.....800x600
1.08%.....1152x864

So it would seem most have their screens at either 1024x768 or 1280x1024, and a quick look at the SX browser stats show that most members are going for browsers at 90%+ of screen size, which curiously, is consistent the result of the last poll I did on the subject on SX.

As I have said before, and will say again, everyone is different and have their own preferences. The general consensus of opinion expressed so far would appear to be in favour, so make of that what you will :)

I know what you mean De, and I see the statistics, but in this case it would be SO EASY to make the change that I suggest.
I hate full-screen windows INTENSELY. They ruin my work. Windows is a plural word. The intention of WindowS is that you can see more of them at the same time. The idea behind WindowS is that you can be more effective. Clicking at a TE every ten seconds and doing nothing else is not.

Nearly all web sites are displayed in FULL at 800px width, so why should the SX site require more? Well, it doesn't of course; I can still use it, but I can't see the information that Tim has included there. Why not spend a few more minutes to make this information available for ALL users without having to maximise the window to see it? Maximizing is relatively fast and easy and putting the window back to normal is also a quick operation -- but it should be completely unnecessary.

I haven't checked Tim's coding here, but I guess he has some CSS statement defining widths. Removing them could solve the problem. Or do something about the Quick Links that can't be used anyway unless you turn of the popup-stopper. And who will do that when surfing TEs? :)

BTW, MY screen resolution is 1600x1200, and I have two workspaces. Anything less would be using the computer with a handicap. Unfortunately, most screens and graphic cards (at least at a decent price) don't offer any more.

During my "daily" walk (Unfortunately it isn't daily any more) I came to think about the surfbar question.

(This post is intended for humans with a little brain activity even if they're not necessarily out walking).

Tim has done something that I haven't seen other TE writers do. He uses an inner frame to display the sites, and the upper and lower surfbar are actually on the same page, as opposed to being in different frames (while the site is in another one).

This is a smart and elegant solution. Tim is an expert of finding smart and elegant solutions! :)
I think he has also modernised the HTML/CSS lately but I'm not 100% sure since I haven't studied the site very intimately.
It would be better if the framed solution disappeared completely since frames will be obsoleted, but they will still be around for another 10 years or so and then we'll have better solutions anyway -- and using an iframe is a step in the right direction.

I have suggested that he made the lower surbar show all the information in it, and that the way to do it would be to change the layout. However, my admirable brain activity (?!?) has given me what seems to be the perfect solution:

The height of the inner frame (IF) must be determined. The height of the lower surfbar is what's LEFT in the window below the IF. So what should be done?

Calculate the height of the IF correctly. Evidently something happens with this calculation when the width of the window becomes too small. I don't know how this could happen, but I'm sure Tim will find out so I'll leave it to him! :)

The current coding of the iframe height (id="content") is:

}I haven't checked the values here, but I feel "content" that an update of this code might do the trick even if I can't see how the width affects the height in this piece of code. In RL the window height doesn't seem to affect the display of the lower bar at all, but the width does.

I just realized why the calculation is wrong: SISU. (S*** In, S*** Out! :) ) When the UPPER surfbar is forced to add one or two lines because there's too litle room for "credits" and "bonus", the rest of the page is pushed down, leaving too little space for the lower surfbar.
This could easily be corrected by following a previous suggestion of mine: Move them to the last line of the upper surfbar; the one with the light brown/orange background. There's enough room.

This doesn't really have to do with the new surf bar... but I would like to see the page where we claim a prize after 100 pages where the "Claim a Prize" is a bit higher on the page (on my screen it is almost covered by my bottom bar), maybe in bigger type... and even flashing or something. I can't count the number of times I have hit that page and clicked for the next page before I realized I was on that claim page... and many times I was even watching the count closely knowing I was close to 100.

Hate to surf my 100 and miss out on my claim because the claim link didn't show up clearly enough.

I agree with you, but Tim has probably also meant to use this prize page as a test that you're really looking at the pages; a simple cheat test if you will.
If I miss it (and I do from time to time) I just proceed without worrying about it. I can live without the daily prizes, and the only reason I click is that I could get my name on the winner's list. That gives a special satisfation.

I've found that prize pages build a habit -- the first times I use a new TE I often miss them, but then they set up some kind of signal in the brain, making me break the tendency to just look at the surfbar and not at the sites; a sin I must admit to have committed once or twice!

I like seeing the name/picture of the person promoting the page that is loading. With quite a few exchanges out there, it feels like the only person with pages in rotation is the exchange owner, and with the "you're site will only be shown to others, and never yourself" concept, you never know if your site is being shown at all...

It would be great to have somewhere on the bar that tells what you need to reach the next level. I surfed a few hundred pages, trying to reach the next level and still haven't gotten there. It would just be nice to know.
