Well,

It looks like I am going to be the first to submit a site for critique :)

I built this totally in css under notepad using mixed fixed and variable width layout elements to make it as flexible as possible for all those weird people (read inge :D) who have obscure browser settings. :)

seriously - if someone can suggest how to get round the bugs - I am all ears :)

Ahh...
No, I'm feeling sick...ahh I'm going...wraaak
Ohh, wait, it was only a bug, coming to me...
But hey, it was the first "critique" though :-)

1) Keep the CSS in the HTML
It'll reduce the number of calls on the server, reducing the load time. CSS in seperate files is more usefull in other areas, but splash pages the less downloads the better ;-)

2) Rather than using Heading Tags..

It *might* work out better to create classes, and use "em" sizes. "px" are exact, but "em" works off percentages. That way you can make the whole div a % of the browser width, and the fonts are all "em" so they get a % of inside that div

(more info http://www.astahost.com/sizes-webdesign-em-vs-px-t8926.html )

3) See what it looks like in other browsers..

I have a priority account at browser shots so I got this whipped up in a minute, but you can get the shots free if you want. 45 different browsers by default:

Also, you might want to try seeing if the images can be set to an em size too, that might make them shrink / stretch properly, but I'm not sure as I haven't tested it (but that weird guy who has the ultra special splash pages prolly knows)

I think the guy would be smaller.
and the text in red if it's possible
being with the same length in the
lines or almost (like my text here).

From an un-professional one in websites.

Looks good to me, but agree with Tims em comments (and the rest of his comments as well). Its always the programmers bane to get cross browser compatibility of design.

No geek speek here...LOL
I think it looks old school. It does not really pop out at me. I think the main thing is the colors do nothing for me.
I am sure if I had any idea what Tim is talking about I would probably agree...LOL

Apart from two things the page is fine.

The two things are:
I would use left justify on the first text (Are you ... ). It looks better.
Tim's suggestion about using "em" is fine, but using % is much better, because it's better to change one place than a hundred.
I use font-size:110% for fonts to be slightly bigger then the "body" font etc.
With CSS you can automatically resize your pictures but alas not the fonts. It's also easily done using %. It's given in % of the div size they're in (Specify only width; the aspect ration is not changed). Never have to specify the size of pictures again!

Oh, and yes it's slightly faster when the CSS is in the html file, and for small files like a splash page it's perhaps a good thing, but personally I use a small number of CSS for several websites, and having to edit all the places is not too practical.
The best solution could be to use one standard CSS to override some weird browser defaults, and then a special one for the site(s).

Weird guy.

Thanks for the smile Ole

Thanks for all the feedback guys - I am going to have to read up on some of this stuff :)
like em and writing css into the html
The images were actually written as background images into a fixed size div, but I could try inserting them as images - this would make your idea of %sizing work Inge

Alright you 'orrible lot - you criticised it, now you can de-bug it :D

I am still stuck on several aspects of css in html

1. How to recreate the border - it ignores the border command in the style class description
2. how to reactivate the float command - again it is ignoring this
3. How to make text align anyway except left!! in the style classes

There could be many reasons why something is ignored in the CSS. I can think of these:

There's a missing semicolon
It's not spelt correctly
The attribute is not valid for the tag
You have another definition later, that overrides it.

Just a few thoughs.

hmmmmm

I basically re-used the existing css, so it should work - shouldn't it??

could be a smelling pistake somewhere I suppose ;)

I tried to load the page again but you must have removed it.

I just made a new welcome page for StartXChange. You can take a look at it here:

All the CSS is in the file so just use view.

You page won't load now because you have exceeded the bandwidth! :)

Uh oh! HawkinzWebHosting limiting your bandwidth eh? hehe I think I did it with StartXchange once even with dedicated server.. I created the account and left the default in thinking I'd never reach that level. Then months later BAM! I now have it set to unlimited ;-)

Hi there DeHawkinz :)

I'm not a techie yet at making splash's, but if I was able to make that splash...I'd be happy....LOL It's plain, simple and right to the point.

Hi there Inge

I like your splash, although the green is a bit much for me. Good job!
Hopefully if I keep on learning, I'll be making some cool splash's too

Hi DeHawkinz,

I like it, looks cool. Love the eye pop.

You may want to try the W3C XHTML/CSS validation services (I hope I'm not breaking any rules here :)):

http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fsplash.hawkinzwebdesigns.co m%2Fno-yawn%2F
and
http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/validator?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fsplash.hawkinzwebdesign s.com%2Fno-yawn%2F

Sorry if I broken the URL rules, it's purely for educational purposes and is not affiliated ;)

Making it XHTML/CSS compliant will help with browser compatibility.

Cheers

The people here are pretty nice. I don't think I have ever seen any critiques that are actually 'negative.' Just lots of good suggestions on how to improve so that you don't have to be afraid to show off. :)
