Hi All

I am going to begin working on making the website scanner filter for adult content. As this works off of words that could be used on non-adult websites, it could call your website adult. Chances are this won't happen, but just a note.

Remember, StartXchange's policy is "Adult Content" can be anything "Family Unfriendly", not just porn. I am much stricter than other exchanges in this area as I find it extremely important to protect the children who's parents work at home and surf at home. Thanks for understanding!

Glad to hear it. I'm no prude, but you're right. There's a time and place for it, and TE's just don't seem all that sexy to me hahah

I thanked your post, but I want to emphasize my thanks. I don't mind looking at adult pics with my husband, but that doesn't mean I'm receptive to them all the time. I did report a site yesterday because the background wasn't just a little suggestive, I could swear a woman's breasts were exposed and it wasn't in an innocent way (such as feeding a child).

Thank you VERY,, VERY much!! I'm no prude either, but sorry don't really like looking at sites or having sites that popup with any porn, soft or otherwise....I have a seven-year-old that is at that question stage........so Thanks Tim!

Well, I am a prude and I thank you.
I also have a 10 year old boy and 1 year old boy so I really appreciate it.

I feel that it's like taking a cure without being sick.

I have used StartXchange for 4 years and have yet to see anything bad. I don't know what's been going on behind the scenes, but so far my attitude is "if it works, don't fix it".

It's OK to prevent fires, but don't turn on the water unless it really burns.

Protecting yourself by blocking ActiveX controls etc. is a MUST for a TE user IMHO, but as long as StartXchange can't influence what other TEs are doing, this is the client's responsibility, not the server's.

Porn is Porn - and should not be shown! Adult sites are a bit different, as SE is (quite rightly) a Family Friendly site. As we members belong to just about any time zone that exists, I think it would be impossible to impose a "watershed time" to view these

So it is up to us, the members, to think in terms of advertising sites suitable for all to view at any time.

I would like to ask:
Who has EVER seen porn in StartXchange?

Not that I like to see such things better than you do, but it's about using the resources where they are needed most. I don't see the need here.

They do come up, and adding a few lines of code into the checker took less time then writing this post =P There haven't been any false positives (and I ran it against the entire database) but it should work great for the occasional sites that get in. Granted members report them quickly and Richard gets to them quickly, but the better the checker is at doing it for us, the more time he can spend on support (or taking a break =P) and the more time I can spend on improving the site ;-)

The site I saw recently that I reported was a dating site that catered to the BDSM crowd. It wouldn't have bothered me much except that it showed profile photos of members. Those photos were definitely adult in nature and should not have been seen on StartXchange.

So, thanks for implementing the adult content filtering.

OK, I thought it was a non-problem. I've never seen anything like "adult" content here, but of course I don't know everything that's going on!

If people want to see porn they can always find it, but it's not nice to have a dirty picture showing up when you don't want it.
I would think such a filter would be very hard to implement, but if it's that easy, by all means go ahead! :)

just a quick insight into the 'problem'

I have removed / paused 69 sites in the past week, of which 4 were adult content, so it is approximately 5-6% of abuse issues.

So yes, it does happen, and yes we do take action - members have had their accounts suspended for repeated abuse.

Anything that makes our job easier is welcome - the more time we have free from 'support' the more time we have for other activities, many of which benefit the members either directly or indirectly :)

I have only come across one site here that I would consider porn, and when I checked the URL, I could see that it was a regular site that had been hijacked. I opened it in a new window so I could gather the info I needed to send a PM to Tim and the page returned to the real content, so the site owner had already seen that his site was hijacked and restored everything from his backup files.

Thank you for working on this filter. I personally have never seen anything questionable here at SX and I don't want to start. Thanks again.

You are so wrong there as far as Porn is Porn!

I Hand Approve sites and get banners with very beautiful shinny behinny's with a quarter inch of cloth between those cheeks, that is not PORN, but I don't allow it.

With EVERY Line, people will see how far they can push that line!

That's why I am not fond of sites using Hits Connect software, this
software for me is USELESS for the simple fact, I care about my members!
This is url software, it cannot see images or text.
I have my own url software for free, but I still hand approve my sites.

I suspend site, back out site name and insert Porno Banner, many times a week! Done it for years and you would think some ballsy dude would have jumped me about it, not one time have they ever griped.

Thank you Tim.
Anything that is a no-brainer and can be automated, go for it!

I have no kids but I don't like the adult pictures at dating sites either.

Can the filtering be extended to include inappropriate sites
such as Cigarettes and Drugs (Illegal & Stimulants)?

soph142
04-09-2008, 09:52 PM
Hmmm - think my previous post got a bit lost about adult sites
Have to agree about cigarettes and (illegal/iffy drugs - Viagra???)

(as soph grabs another ciggy and lights up)

Adult sites by my definition are those that give help to adults- anything from partner problems to well - why can't I do whatever?

Now you would not your children to view these sites but you might

So the ban here is good - and thanks for it being enforced

OK to clarify :)

adult sites = sites not appropriate for a minor to be viewing.
Ruke of thumb - would I permit my children to view this unsupervised?

There will always be an element of judgement involved, but in Soph's example - illegal drugs would not be permitted.

As a stay at home worker (owner of several TE's and 8 PTC's so far), am well aware of the problems.Am also an affiliate to a site who's products are not "adult content" as such, but their ad pages and banners do border on adult content and as such do not promote them on my own sites. There are sites out there (TE and PTC) that deal in adult based content and that is where I advertise them at. Not everyone is as considerate.

Thank you for caring.
