Is it just me or is SX running really slow today? My other TE's are OK but SX is taking about twice as long to load.

Pleased you got the problem solved. probably just a non specific Internet speed problem unrelated to StartXchange.

Cheers

Are these recent occurances or has it always every once in a while had issues?

All the blogspot sites are very slow, and wordpress too, but they're not so many.
I don't have the patience to wait for them load, so I have them blocked. :)

I've been surfing most of the day off and on and haven't had any problems with the sites loading. Sorry to hear some of you are having problems.
Try clearing your temp files and cookies

No problems at all here. Have had some problems with some other TEs lately, but SX has been AOK.

Same here, no problems at all with SX being slow.
Timeout issues with other TEs.

it seems ok today..maybe WHERE we surf from is the problem..

That is most likely the issue, since so many are surfing at the same time and experiencing no problems :-/

Overall SX is not much of an issue with time-out. It happened once or twice that SX won't load & need to refresh & everything will be fine after that.

Sometimes when it is really slow, I would shut my modem for a minute or two, clearing all cache, disk clean-up & defragmenter which I do it everyday & it will be alright.

If slow connection still persist, I would call our Network Service Provider to lodge a report & they would investigate & test to reset my IP. Normally it will be restore to smooth surfing in an hour if there is really some technical issue.

So far so good for SX.

Frankie

Hello,

I was saying that I don't have time-out issue & now I got it for not being able to load SX for about 30mins while other TEs are alright.

Message as follows :
The connection has timed out

The server at www.startxchange.com is taking too long to respond.

* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.

Frankie

Ok if that's the case, then it's the firewall blocking you. If you send me an email the next time this happens, I can find out why it's blocking you. Steps:

1) Goto whatismyip.org
2) Copy/paste that IP address to admin@startxchange.com

I'll then check out the logs and see if I can spot the problem! Sorry for the troubles!

I was about to start a new post but saw this one and thought it may be related to "The average load time (in past 24 hours)" showing 10 sec when it use to show 3 sec for the same splash pages.

I have noticed speed loading changes and I started checking th size of the banners and I think it may be the large banners that some people are using that makes it appear that it's the site that is slow loading, when it's the banner that is causing the slow down.
People should optimize banners also, I've seen so that are 45,000 bytes and more.
Maybe a check should be done on the size of the banners and if they are over 25-30 bytes, tell the person to optimize them. This is a good site to do it fast http://tools.dynamicdrive.com/imageoptimizer/

Sorry about this. I should put a note in the news section. Because of the firefox bug, the load time part of the surfbar has been disabled. With it enabled, FF will randomly crash.

This is incredible. I tested with one picture (68kB) and even with 90% reduction it didn't look too bad. I've bookmarked the site and will definitely use it for my pictures.

Sometimes all it takes is cleaning out the cookies
and temp files that your browser stores...Other
times it could be a glitch in the script and Tim will
take care of it ASAP...

God Bless and Keep on surfing

Pics that are large be it on a site or a banner always load slower. You can optimized them and they load muck quicker which is less time waiting.

Yes Inge, it's a really good tool and people should use it to benefit everyone and themselves. People don't like waiting for loading images, plus if it messes up your browsing they really could care less about your fancy pic or banner.

I agree about the banners but pictures can make a difference. However, if reducing a picture from 100k to 10k doesn't make it look too bad, I'll start doing that. I'll have to remember to keep the original though! :)

Inge, if you take an optimized pic back to that site and upload it, it will make larger again for you. You should always save you originals though. people using TE's should be very concerned when using pic's and banner's that are over 6-8kb, that seems to be a magic number for VERY fast loads. When I have seen banners here at 45 and even 60KB..that's completely nuts.

Hi palladan,

I tested it & don't know how to use it. I upload my picture & it shows about 5-6 of them & that's it. What do I do with it ? How do you get a re-size or how do I make use of the site you mention ?

Thanks..
Frankie

Right click on the picture you want, and choose "Save As".
