q=03468 is really being a pain not sure if that is the right thing or not but it was at the end of the surfing page link and since that normally changes every page I figured you can find the link from that. It keep sending error reports and I am not surfing here until that link is removed. I have been booted now 36 times this morning. And its a pain in the A$$. Royally ticked off here.

hilda,

you really do need to submit it using the report site button on the surfbar.

I am not sure how many sites we have in rotation, but we have 34,500 members, and if they all only had just one site that would be a LOT of sites to look through :(

Even if a site causes you to lose your surfbar, or reboot, you can still find it - just restart the surf session, click on the report button, and select the problem site - it will usually be the second one in the list, but if not sure you can click the link to check :)

you cant submit it that way I tried but firefox was frozen, which happens when an error is detected. And as soon as the site starts to load it does that every time. Its enough to make you want to shoot someone.

Just realized that every site has a number so yes it can be found all admin has to do is go into the admin, and look up the site number. just like I use to do when I had my old auto surf. Its not that hard to do as long as you have the site number. You dont have to go thru 10,000 sites to find one site just punch in the number and your there.

I have had the same problem. The window pops up every 20 or25 pages or so and says "Firefox has encountered a problem and has to close" My computer is frozen and all you can do is clicl "close" When I reopen startXchange and click report and try to find the page, its not there. It could be any one page in there rotator. I can't see a page number because the page causing the problem never opens.I don't want to report every page that is not causing the problem.

next time it happens, send a report for site 2 in the list - don't worry, I check ALL abuse reports before actioning them, so if I can't replicate the problem the site will not be penalized. Also, if you report the site, you have the option of blocking the site until I can check it, so it will not display again in the meantime (saving you the problem :))

I do not penalize members for reports I do not action - if a member repeatedly reports a site I may investigate further to see if I can get to the bottom of the issue - sometimes it is simply a mis-understanding over rules/definitions.

I have manually checked the site, and can not see any problems with it. If it gives you issues again, please report it and I will investigate further - the report link includes additional information which may help us to get to the bottom of the issue.

It's a poke in the dark, but I had to cut APSense off my script whitelist because it would load fine alone but cause Firefox to crash if I viewed it during a surf session here. I thought it was just my computer being nutty, but it may be worth looking into.

I had the same problem and it was really ticking me off. But I finally got the site number by memorizing it from the end of the surf link. I am going to try surfing today and hope that it doesnt happen again. Never opened for me either just got the stupid popup that said there was an error. But I will try to reopen and report the second one next time and the blocking will help loads. Its a major pain if like me you have a set goal that you want to surf. Which I never did reach.

Another site number and I cant even report it. 65641 same problem this is ticking me off. I cant even report it I click report and get the popup. reopen click report get the popup. It wont let me report it at all. I tried 5 times to report it and will go in and look once more and if it doesnt work I am out of here for today. This isnt worth my time.

Hilda

also check 66514 same problem with that one. I give up and once again will not make my goal. I tried 4 times to report it and still couldnt because the popup popped up. Its just a bit much. Sorry to say it but if its not cleaned up, I persnally will be leaving SX for good.

Ok this makes time #4 that I got the lock up again but this is site number and what it said when loading:
loading totalteamprofit.com site #74146
This one was the worst so far it almost crashed my computer I had to shut power off and power back up to get in here. So I am not happy. Even error message got locked up.

I might ad this, Every time my site is frozen and I have to close and reopen . StartXchange opens with a SURF BAR at the top of the page. It's not mine and it was downloaded by the site that crashed my computer. I have a screen shot of it and I can send it to you If I have a email address to send it to.

Hi

Send a PM to me with the username that the surfbar changed to and I'll look into their account. Also note that the &q=##### is NOT the number of the website being shown. If you click report that page does list the website number, however as Richard said when you report the site additional things happen:

1) The website is automatically scanned by our system for known problems (in case they changed the content after it was deemed clean)

2) The report is filed with information about your browser. Since some problems only occure in IE or FF etc, having the details lets us know which browser to be checking the website from.

3) The report system knows how many times each site has been reported and lets us know. If a site looks clean but has been reported alot, we'll know.

So yes we can look it up by ID, but using the report feature helps us do a much more thorough job of finding problems than if we had the number =P

It doesen't change the surf bar it just adds a new one below yours. I also clicked there site from the "Surfing History" and nothing happens. It seem to only happen on the original download through StartXchange, I am using the latest version of Firefox. This only started in the last week. The surfbar is nameless and protected . I can't get any listing on it.

I just started surfing today about 1 pm (est) and Firefox has not closed on me at all. The time is now 2:29 pm (est) Surfing is smooth and I have had no problems.

Just my suggestion, scan your computer for a virus called win32. It's a Trojan and can be the reason your computers are going haywire. I caught this bugger trying to get me a couple days ago, or should I say that Avast got it and did a great job of removing it.

Avast:

Hope things get better for all of you

The problem is its locking us up so fast we cant report it, and when you reopen firefox and make it so its the same thing it was it freezes again and once again we are stuck, I had that happen 17 times yesterday and finally clicked start new session and logged in here and then surfed clicked report and it showed just the one site that I had just been on, so that didnt work. Then the following site after I gave up on reporting was the crash site. So once again I was kicked so hard out of SX my butt still hurts.

That is why I gave the number that was at the end of the sites doing it. If thats all I can get thats all I can give you.

I did however surf other exchanges yesterday and had no problems so its here at SX where they are showing it. I havent had a crash at all anyplace other then here.

Thanks for the feedback. I've modified the surfbar, let's see if this fixes the problem temporarily ;-) (It's a feature I'd like to stay, but FF seems to crash from it so it seems)

hilda, if Tims fix doesnt work there may be a temporary work around - NOTE: this is not for normal use, just as a one-off!!

if it is happening regularly enough you'll be able to get the info a different way.

next time it crashes, log back in to start exchange, go to the following page and copy the info on it.

http://www.startxchange.com/members/history.php

send a copy of ALL the list to me by email at the support address

do this for the next 2 or 3 times it crashes - we may be able to get a better idea of what is happening, as I have an idea about this but I will need all the data to be sure.

Just a thought - got my settings for no sound and dial up mode on.
Been ok so far today here (1000 clicks) - so - are your settings any different?
Using Firefox with AdBlock+ and ermm - at least 2 other live spyware programs runnining on a very ancient groaning computer

Don't I know the frustration of a locked browser and computer all too well! (cuss cuss cuss) How about trying another browser to see if the same thing happens there?

tooties xxx, and good luck

It's definately a bug with Firefox itself. I've submitted a bug report to them, so hopefully next release it'll be fixed. It seems to only happen when a page tries to load that is sluggish loading. So with dial up mode on it tries to give you quick loading pages, and the bug would not present itself as much.

Note that I removed the portion of the surfbar that I believe the bug was happening with, so it should be working smoothly now. If it continues to crash then there could be other issues at hand.

Smooth sailing today, no crashes,I've just surfed over 170 pages with no problem. I don,t think it's Win32, I did nothing and Tim fixed it. I think the culprits webpage was designed to crash your browser and then on reloading installed another surfbar. At least thats how it worked on my computer. His webpage also contained a robot feature also.

I surfed a bit over 100 pages and no problems, thanks for the fix, I knew it wasnt my computer and I have DSL so its not due to dialup. But I also dont use explorer due to so many viruses that it can pick up and trojans so I always stick with firefox. Which is why I have a new computer my old one got a huge virus on it, about 6 months ago using explorer. When I got the new computer I went with DSL I will never go back to dialup lol.

I am going to surf away the day tomorrow, since its fixed now. Maybe I can reach 600 pages which was my goal the other day.

If it happens again I will send it off to you. So far rap on wood it has been ok this evening. But I also was surfing mornings before. But I will know for sure tomorrow since I want to reach that 600 page goal. I need to surf some more tonight anyways, so I am off to get some pages surfed.

The problem is not in the browser but in the clients website that is trying to give us a hard time. He is back today and crashed my computer (with a twist) This time it freezes your browser and you have to close the browser, then you cannot reopen the browser.A pop up says there is already a Firefox browser running. But your browser is closed. I clicked on "Windows Task Manager" and sure enough there are 3 Firefox browsers running.I didn't want to close then from there and my computer was saying to close and reboot. So I did,and firefox reopened ok. I reported the site and blocked him.

Hmm I'll keep an eye on it. One thing you could try.. Check that your version of Quick Time is up to date. Sites that used QT were causing me to crash, but after updating it everything was fine. Took a long time to figure out that was the problem.

soph142
04-09-2008, 09:09 PM
Ahh - Quick Time - it gave me all sorts of problems just over a month ago or 2

It was nasty to uninstall too - you need a decent registry checker to remove all the links
Not reinstalled it either!

Once bitten twice shy lol

Huh? Ditched QT? Then what do you use to view Apple's movie trailers?

hildar
04-10-2008, 11:37 AM
QT is something I stop from running when I first start my computer. It is something that I never knew we had to have running, so I always use my task manager to get things off from here that are running. Like my printer that I dont use, and my fax machine, ect. As for watching movies I dont watch any of those stupid things, and if they start to show one on a site, I always turn it off. They do have stop and start buttons.

Hilda

inge
04-10-2008, 01:59 PM
Same here Hilda. I don't watch those stupid things! :)
If a site won't show because there's no QT, then I don't want to see that site. There are enough problems running Windows. No need to go ask for them.

you mean windows does run now and then lol just kidding

I use the NT fat system for my laptop and it rarely crashes in fact cant remember the last time!

I remember once in the old days, I had been working with real computers and didn't realize how vulnerable the PC was. I had a structure error on my HD and lost two weeks of project programming. I had no backup, because I had been using computers for 15 years and never needed to restore. I became sloppy, and it paid off! :)
I would never use the FAT system again. Even the NTFS system sucks, but it's still a better alternative.

oh I hate losing work :(

When I did my degree in computing we had to use the college computers which were very basic and most people forgot to save their work I suppose familiarity breeds contempt. I now have a back up drive that has all my sensitive stuff on it and I back up about once a month should do it more I know but as I am designing websites at the moment its all online anyway.

Never be complacent about computers they will eat you up and spit you out no matter what system you have.

One day they will make a crash proof computer I guess but we have to remember 50 years or so ago there was no such thing as a computer and certainly mo internet as we know it today. They have come a long way since bbc micro and games machines like the ataris and conmmodores.

no excitement

hmmm lost work - exciting nope
virus eating its way into your data - exciting nope
malware nattering to the net for you - exciting nope
computer not knowing which way is up - now that is exciting lol
