View Full Version : Signatures and Buddy Lists etc.

Two questions (for now).
1. I set up my signature here and it works, but then I clicked the private message link to get to that area and went to the signature link because I decided to change the color and nothing was there. So, do we now have two signatures (one for the forum and one for PMs)?
2. Buddy list is empty. I have TONS of Buddys - all of my downline, my teammates, and just friends. Is there some easy way to import that list or do we have to set them all up manually again. When you're just adding a person it's no big deal to manually enter them; but when you have a huge list it becomes a major chore. :(

The signature problem seems to have been fixed because I now see my signature whether I'm posting here or inthe PM section. Don't know why it wasn't showing up before.

1. That's odd, there should only be one signature page.
2. Humm. I haven't used the Buddy List so I'm not sure about this. I'd have to learn how it worked on both the OLD and NEW Forums so it probably won't be an automatic thing. Some things are easier than others to figure out, so I'll look into it and it *might* happen but I can't guarantee..

Ok I'm looking at it now. vBulletin you don't pick nick names for people, it just adds them to your list. Is this still useful? If so then I believe I can make it work. If not, then I won't =P
I'm asking you because you are using the list, I don't use it so I'm not really sure what the purpose is. Makes me realize I'm not even using all the features to the max. But then again everyone would be on my buddy list right? hehe

Hi Su,
I was wondering the same thing myself but I don't see any way to import them either. I don't see it as much a problem, though, since I never saw the point of the buddy list to begin with, and you can add anyone you like at any time by simply clicking their name... now the ignore list, that's a different story. :p
Maybe you could share with us the usefulness of this feature - that would be great. :)
I used the buddy list to keep track of real names. The new buddy lit doesn't have that feature, so I guess we'll have to use another method.

I for now have a very short buddy list, but I would know how will it work.
Thanks
Noemi
For now I've saved the old buddy list in an Excel worksheet. :)

Yes Tim. At least that's better than nothing - but I'll really miss the Name feature.

The Buddy list is great. I use it every time I send a message because you never have to type the username - and we all know how strange some usernames are, with numbers at the end, etc.
You just open the New Message window and select one or more names from the drop-down Buddy List right next to the To field and the names will be added. The comma between each name is also automatically added.
I wouldn't say I'm lazy. I'm just verrrry busy. So when I find a tool that speeds up any process and ensures accuracy I use it. This makes sending PMs MUCH faster and I never make a type when entering the username.

I do too. It's particularly helpful when I need to PM someone on my team that I don't communicate with regularly and I don't remember their name.

I've been trying to do that. How did you get your Buddy List into Excel?
The long and winding road, Su. Since copy/paste doesn't work in the fields I copied everything manually.
If my list were much longer I'd have copied the html code and edited it. Shouldn't take too much effort.

I was reeeeeally hoping you had found some secret way for the info to magically import beautifully, but alas it's as I thought, copy and edit the code, or copy/paste each individual piece.
Oh well, looks like I have quite a chore ahead of me because my Buddy List is quite long. Thanx for the info.

Gotcha. Sort of like an email address book - makes sense. I sure could use anything that will speed up any process! :D
Hopefully, Tim can get it working for us. If he can't, nobody can! ;)

Something cool about vBulletin, if you start typing in the username in the PM section, after 3 characters it'll try to help you with the rest (sorta like Gmail with email addresses). Would this be just as helpful or no?

I assume you are using excel try this copy the buddy list then in excel select paste special and then unicode it will paste it all for you in nice neat columns exactly as your buddy list im not sure about pics for this tho beats doing it the long way round

NOTE:
This method works fine if you use Firefox.
This does not work if you are using internet explorer - the option then is to paste as html, but you get less control over the resulting output.

Hi Sue,
I'd agree with you, buddy list was useful for me too..
Stefan
Hi Dehawkinz too,

That would depend on what it uses as a basis for the autocomplete. If it looks through your Buddy list it wouldn't be any better than the Buddy list (unless of course you have several hundred buddies, so that feature would speed up finding the person). If it uses a dictionary it wouldn't be helpful because usernames are rarely words. If it "stores" addresses you have used before but may not have added to your Buddy list that might be helpful, but only if you remember the first 3 letters. ;)

Su - It works on the usernames in the DB, so it doesn't matter if they are on your list or not or if you've ever PMd them before. Does this help, or would you still like the Buddy List back?
There is a buddy list - in the second last menu entry under Private Messages (Miscellaneous). The difference from the old buddy list is you can only save the user name, nothing else.

Yes, what I'm saying is it usefull enough that you guys would like me to make a conversion script to convert the old list here?
I wouldn't bother, but my list was so short I could copy them manually, and for those with a dire need I understand they could copy/paste with FireFox?.

personally I dont use the buddy list anymore the predictions are clever enough to guess whom I want to pm anyway so unless you are really stuck for something to do (as far as I feel) I wouldnt bother
and yes inge you can copy paste with firefox as I said earlier in this thread :)

For some reason I don't see it in my list. I used to be able to just click on a screen name and then on the next page one of the options would be to add them to my buddy list but now that is gone too. Any ideas??
dehawkinz

No, you are correct that option no longer exists
But then the maximum limit on how many people you can PM at once is now 5, so you would have needed a very small buddy list to be able to PM them all :)
