Today I was searching for the English lyrics for the song "Sunrise, Sunset" from Fiddler on the Roof. I found the lyrics, and there was also a link, telling me that I could have it as a ringtone. I thought that would be nice so I clicked, and before I knew it it announced that I had been debited NOK30 from my phone bill and had started a subscription that would cost NOK60 - per WEEK!
That's more than USD 10.

One ringtone normally costs NOK10-15. In the 12+ years I've had a mobile phone, I have never downloaded one before so I was probably an easy victim.

But that's not the worst: I was continually being spammed with SMS messages. I tried to resign immediately, and started getting SMS messages that I had been deactivated, then activated, then deactivated.

I entered their website and wrote them a serious letter, reminding them that if not stopped, their illegal actions would be prosecuted. I received some more messages, but it has now been quiet for several hours.

If I were a child or a more innocent person they could have stolen an undetermined amount of money via my phone bill.

The name of the company is funmobile.com . They have subdomains for each country.

Look out for scamming companies like this.

Oh, BTW, this company did not have any "Sunrise, Sunset" ringtones, even if they offered them.

You mean they have mobiles in that scary viking land Inge :D

that is pretty scary we have ringtone companies over here they range from $12 to $20 a week

I did join one once but they were ok when I unsubscribed just sending me a message when I unsubscribed asking me if I was willing to them why.

So there are good companies too.

In fact it was ebay that gave me trouble with my mobile I subscribed to their alert service and promptly got 5 or six messages saying you are subscribed unsubscribed and as to which I am I am now throughly confused and when I ask to ge allowed to use the service for a particular item they say its not available and this happens everytime ebay said put in a request for help about which I did and I never heard anything so I wrote back and still ignored which for ebay is very unsual when I fianlly got through using their live chat I found it had been "slipping through the cracks" to be honest it wasnt a crack felt more like a great big fiord

oh well I still dont know if I am subscribed ot not lol

Recently there was a story on TV about an 8 year old boy who had been scammed. He received all kinds of messages (SMS and MMS), including sex-oriented stuff, on his phone and was heavily charged for it. His parents took affair, but they were unable to stop it until they contacted the TV company for help. When this was made public the company had all kinds of excuses and said they were sorry and would make everything go away. Even the bills.

But it shouldn't be necessary to contact a TV company (or the police) to get rid of scammers.

Oh yes Rev Joy, we have many really bad things here. But we still don't have horns! :)

cellphone text messaging service is the next target for spammer. Unlike e-mail you do get charge the message if you're in the US :)

I've heard about this coming up alot. It doesn't help that cell phone companies make it easy on them to do it, and hard for you to cancel. They say that you have to goto the company to cancel. If it ever happens to me, I'll switch carriers..
