"Twenty-Five Things It Took Me Over 50 Years To Learn" by Dave Barry

1. The badness of a movie is directly proportional to the number of helicopters in it.

2. You will never find anybody who can give you a clear and compelling reason why we observe daylight-saving time.

3. People who feel the need to tell you that they have an excellent sense of humor are telling you that they have no sense of humor.

4. The most valuable function performed by the federal government is entertainment.

5. You should never say anything to a woman that even remotely suggests you think she's pregnant unless you can see an actual baby emerging from her at that moment.

6. A penny saved is worthless.

7. They can hold all the peace talks they want, but there will never be peace in the Middle East. Billions of years from now, when Earth is hurtling toward the Sun and there is nothing left alive on the planet except a few microorganisms, the microorganisms living in the Middle East will be bitter enemies.

8. The most powerful force in the universe is gossip.

9. The one thing that unites all human beings, regardless of age, gender, religion, economic status, or ethnic background, is that, deep down inside, we all believe that we are above-average drivers.

10. There comes a time when you should stop expecting other people to make a big deal about your birthday. That time is age 11.

11. There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."

12. People who want to share their religious views with you almost never want you to share yours with them.

13. There apparently exists, somewhere in Los Angeles, a computer that generates concepts for television sitcoms. When TV executives need a new concept, they turn on this computer; after sorting through millions of possible plot premises, it spits out, "THREE QUIRKY BUT ATTRACTIVE YOUNG PEOPLE LIVING IN AN APARTMENT," and the executives turn this concept into a show. The next time they need an idea, the computer spits out, "SIX QUIRKY BUT ATTRACTIVE YOUNG PEOPLE LIVING IN AN APARTMENT." Then the next time, it spits out, "FOUR QUIRKY BUT ATTRACTIVE YOUNG PEOPLE LIVING IN AN APARTMENT." And so on. We need to locate this computer and destroy it with hammers.

14. Nobody is normal.

15. At least once per year, some group of scientists will become very excited and announce that:
* The universe is even bigger than they thought!
* There are even more subatomic particles than they thought!
* Whatever they announced last year about global warming is wrong.

16. If you had to identify, in one word, the reason why the human race has not achieved, and never will achieve, its full potential, that word would be "meetings."

17. The main accomplishment of almost all organized protests is to annoy people who are not in them.

18. The value of advertising is that it tells you the exact opposite of what the advertiser actually thinks. For example:
* If the advertisement says "This is not your father's Oldsmobile," the advertiser is desperately concerned that this Oldsmobile, like all other Oldsmobiles, appeals primarily to old farts like your father.
* If Coke and Pepsi spend billions of dollars to convince you that there are significant differences between these two products, both companies realize that Pepsi and Coke are virtually identical.
* If the advertisement strongly suggests that Nike shoes enable athletes to perform amazing feats, Nike wants you to disregard the fact that shoe brand is unrelated to athletic ability.
* If Budweiser runs an elaborate advertising campaign stressing the critical importance of a beer's "born-on" date, Budweiser knows this factor has virtually nothing to do with how good a beer tastes.

19. If there really is a God who created the entire universe with all of its glories, and He decides to deliver a message to humanity, He will not use, as His messenger, a person on cable TV with a bad hairstyle.

20. You should not confuse your career with your life.

21. A person who is nice to you, but rude to the waiter, is not a nice person.

22. No matter what happens, somebody will find a way to take it too seriously.

23. When trouble arises and things look bad, there is always one individual who perceives a solution and is willing to take command. Very often, that individual is crazy.

24. Your friends love you anyway.

25. Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance.

lol I like that

but there is a clear reason for daylight saving tho it doesnt apply these days

In WWII the farmers needed more daylight to get in the crops so we have daylight saving

its carried over from that

:) Im a farmers daughter so should know lol

Hmmm, actually, the amount of daylight is constant, no matter what time you call it - you still get exactly the same number of hours of daylight, so you do NOT save daylight.
I am a physicists son, I should know :)

Think about it - if it is daylight from 6am to 6pm (12 hours ie) and we decided that we were moving the clocks forward one hour, then it would be daylight from 7am to 7pm = errrr 12 hours!

maybe a better name would be DRT (Daylight Renaming Time) :D

but de they need later daylight time to get the crops in ie they were working til 10pm at night thats the reason for later daylight lol

Daylight savings can actually help reduce our carbon footprint. How many people are up at 5-6am in the morning in comparison to those awake at 7-8pm at night?

That extra hour of daylight in the evening for 3 months of the year adds up to a great deal of saved energy ;)

Is green, is good. Our kids future depends on it!

Daylight Savings Time should be 86'd!
There is nothing gained by it...
Time goes on no matter if you spring ahead or fall back!

Agree msbeejay

But I think a lot of employers dont allow flexitime to that extent (oh I wish)

Here where I live in the UK I would be happy for "wintertime" to start in November and finish in early March

I see USA trimmed their wintertime back by at least a week either end this last winter
What what what? Energy Saving?

All for it!

I am ALL for saving Energy and Our planet as well...
However, EVERYBODY needs to be willing to take some
responsibility for doing their share...

Daylight Savings Time aside...
Get Energy Efficient Appliances
Use Electricity and Water Wisely

Recycle Aluminum Cans and Plastic

Rinsing out cans keep insects away and
will alleviate any foul smells from your
container(s)...

God Bless and Keep on surfing...

over here in the uk recycling seems to be a hit and miss affair some people do and some dont personally I recycle all our paper, glass and plastic and cardboard all our books go to a thrift shop as do our useable clothes and other items. This is if I cant use it to make something from.

In Northampton UK where my mum lives they have recycling centers where you can take stuff and other people can buy the stuff that is salvegable I have brought many a doll and baby stuff as well as some nice pics for my walls that way.

white goods are usually taken away by the local authorities and in this house at lest we have energy efficant where we can. In fact even the car is good for carbon footprint well in the respect that I only do around 8000 miles a year

problem is you lose that perceived added daylight in the evening when the clocks move around in the evening / morning. Changing the time you have your daylight does not actually make any more daylight available, its just an illusion. Oh, and for the record, I am up at 5am most mornings :)

I'm lucky to live in a tropical climate (averages 23 degrees C in winter) :D I'm also lucky to have solar power and have the energy companies paying me for the additional power I generate and don't require :p

I too am up at 4-4:30am each day as it is the best time of day IMHO.

But, if you walk down your street, how many others are up at the same time? Vast majority are still in bed until the light of day rears its head.

I did not say that changing clocks has any bearing on the times that the sun rises and sets, daylight savings only maximizes the "usable" and "practical" light hours we have "for the benefit of most people". Notice the emphasis on most. You may have a different opinion, I certainly have mine, but we're only one person, not majority.

Thanks to the baby boomers, us generation Xers (Y, Z and beyond too) are going to have a difficult future ahead of us due the obliteration of natural resources and the corresponding effect it will have on our planet. Oil for example is in our ground for a reason (lubrication of plates possibly - who knows, but it's placed there by our complex ecosystem for a good reason, unbeknown to us at this time), not for us to harvest and burn it into thin air.

We're already staring to see most unusual climate shunts and the ocean currents (thermohaline circulation) are undergoing changes not seen in the history of our human-race (no it's not from polar caps melting either). That's why climate change is becoming a significant issue these days. Science (not tree huggers) is starting to realise this and recognise it is occurring much faster than predicted.

What's it going to be like in 10, 20, 50, even 100 years from now? Negligence to acknowledge this is pure ignorance and typical of the majority baby boomer attitude - I don't care about anything other than myself... When I'm dead, I'm dead - who cares what happens after I'm gone

I'm no tree hugging hippie, just aware that we're for here for a very short time and will be leaving our children, their children and their children's children behind to deal with our mess.

After re-reading my rant, I realise that I may have been a bit harsh on the boomers. I know that you all aren't like that, some can think outside that tiny little square.

Anyway, haccel, I agree with you about one thing:

The absolutely worst thing we can do with our precious oil is to burn it. That's a crime towards the future generations, who would be able to use it for a much better purpose.
Refine it into food and fertilizer, for one.

I'm wondering if there's anything we can do? If we can get the word out about working from home, we do cut down on commuting. Anyone knows of any viable alternatives to petrol or diesel burning automobiles? I remember a film that came out 2 years ago, called Who Killed the Electric Car? (http://www.whokilledtheelectriccar.com/). Unfortunately, it wasn't shown over here.

Well we do still make electric cars in Norway, but they've been close to bankruptcy several times .... :(

revjoybunny

there are several hybrid cars on the market that use normal fuel and either the energy wasted by braking or electricity for extra fuel

not really sure how they work but I bet de does he is a fount of all knowledge :)

Bill Cosby is widely recognized as a sage of modern family life. Many of his choice quotes have a lot of application to global politics, which are included below for your own amusement.

1. A word to the wise ain’t necessary—it’s the stupid ones that need the advice.

2. Anyone can dabble, but once you’ve made that commitment, your blood has that particular thing in it, and it’s very hard for people to stop you.

3. Even though your kids will consistently do the exact opposite of what you’re telling them to do, you have to keep loving them just as much.

4. I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.

5. No matter how calmly you try to referee, parenting will eventually produce bizarre behavior, and I’m not talking about the kids. Their behavior is always normal.

6. The main goal of the future is to stop violence. The world is addicted to it.

7. The past is a ghost, the future a dream, and all we ever have is now.

8. You can turn painful situations around through laughter. If you can find humor in anything, even poverty, you can survive it.

People hate the truth.

Tell someone the truth, and they'll hate you for it.
In addition, when something goes wrong for someone, YOU are to blame, they are not.

Conclusion: Keep your mouth shut, and let everyone steer their own ship.
