View Full Version : Psychology of surfing

I was wondering if anyone else paid any attention to their thoughts while surfing. When I first begin to surf, it's a struggle to reach the 20 page surfed mark. But once there, it's like, at least I have made it thus far. Then if nothing pulls me away from the computer, I can usually make it to 70 pages viewed (an up-hill climb), after than I am on a roll, nothing seem to matter. It's like the "second wind" that runners get. After that second wind seem as though you can run (surf) forever.
Also, the more team members I see surfing at the same time seem to make me feel that I am not alone in cyberspace. Even a high active surfers' number helps me feel like I got company.
So, everyone surf more, I don't like to feel alone.:)
I know the feeling Sherwood. Several times I've been looking at my position and seen it change. Someone "runs" past me in a speed that I can't possibly match. Sometimes I pass someone. Sometimes I climb, and another person climbs with me. Seeing these situations I've sometimes sent a PM just to say a friendly hello. Told them humorously to slow down. I haven't done that in vain. I've surfed in many TEs but never experienced anything like it. StartXchange is special. I feel more like part of a family here than anywhere else.

I have dne the same looking out for team members or other friends and as Inge does I will pm them and say I saw them this is so good for your surfing it keeps you going for that bit longer than you otherwise may want to. I have found many friends here and I count each member an acquaintance.
For example BCT and I had a wonderful conversation while surfing yesterday :)

Thanks, I hadn't thought of sending a PM. That's something to keep in mind.

Same here. I know the feeling too. Sometimes there's a feeling of disappointment too when I find lots of people surfing (like 150 people this evening) and only 2-3 members of my team surfing.... :(

today I am surfing on my own but generally there are 2 or 3 it has been as high as 8 or 9. I like the PM system its much quicker than email and its almost like a chat. I have sorted out quite a few bonuses and competitions that way as well as sympathized with a few people and laughed with others :)

This post may have inspired adding "chat" ~ initially I thought it was an idea borrowed from another site.

When I started surfing it was purely to get credits. I have been around quite a few years and recently went back to one of the BIG Te's and it felt quite strange to be in a group but have no interaction. To be honest, Inge has such unique energy, you feel it when you read his posts..
there is another TE where I feel close connection with the team, but it is because we became friends whilst forming it.
I think the gist of it is that you do want some *family* ties, even if you never meet the people in real life..
To be honest I close the chat here on SX because it isnt chatting but reading stuff from people I dont know yet

Thank you for your kind words Anne!
If I seem to have a lot of energy it's because I find SX, the team ("family") so rewarding, so I do spend a lot of time, thought and energy on it.
I feel very much like you about the other things. SX was just another TE to me until just over a year ago, when I decided to upgrade and start a team. Most of the time I've been very happy with it. The only negative feelings I have is when someone leaves the team -- or worse: I have to boot someone.

I have come and gone from SX for various reasons but eventually return
because of how Tim Linden handles his exchange...
I was an avid surfer and also belong to several different Teams but since
my surfing habits have ebbed I do not feel it is fair for any Team to carry
members who are not pulling their weight...
The resources available on SX are great and I have managed to build up a
good credit base regardless of what the surfing bonus % happens to be...
Also, it helps having a few very active downline members as well...
It is hard to know why people join an TE if they don't even bother surfing
which does not help them accumulate credits so their sites get shown in
rotation...That is, if they even have any sites added at all?
Oh well, that's life on an Exchange...
Anyway, being in the forum community and having a chance to help out
fellow members when I can is reward enough for being an upgraded member
on SX...
God Bless and Keep on surfing everyday...

I would like to think it did, however, I remember someone else talking about chat also. Don't know if it was v=before or after this post.
I like chat. most of the time I'm just lurking thou. but love to see the exchange of good conversation. Sometimes I do jump in for a few words.
It's not like having enough space to compose a complete thought as in the forum. It would be nice if we could merge the two some way LOL
